I have been through multiple peaks and valleys and weathered many storms at startups and large companies. Every startup I've been at came close to folding, Several had to go through cost-cutting and layoffs. However, they all recovered in one form or another leading to three startups being acquired and three that filed for IPO (one of them reaching a $25B valuation). When times are tough and you need to cut costs, there are usually many things happening at once. It's hard to do it mindfully if you haven't been through it before. And yet doing a layoff and the follow-up is critical to a company's chances of survival and success afterward (a la Ben Horowitz's The Hard Thing about Hard Things). I've not only seen amazing success afterwards, but also boosts in morale in times where morale is more likely to tank.
