If you want to move into or succeed in an engineering directorial role it's essential to have a clear understanding of the differences between EM and Eng Director. In this circle, you will gain valuable skills as I guide you through the key differences and how they can impact your role. By the end of this circle, you will feel confident in your ability to effectively lead and direct your engineering team as well as stay tuned into your leadership politics and strategic landscape.

At least 2 years of experience in engineering management

Current professional title of Engineering Director or wish to move there in the next 18 mos

In our first session, we will get to know each other and I will introduce you to the topic of managing vs directing. We will discuss the main differences and how they relate to your role as an engineering director. This session will set the foundation for the rest of the circle.

Introduction to Managing vs Directing

In this session, we will dive deeper into the responsibilities a director has. We will also discuss politics, communication, and strategy as a part of this new position. We can discuss OKR tactics as well as I'm very experienced on this topic.

Politics, communication, and strategy.

In this session we will discuss the difference between managing ICs and managing managers. Delegation, empowerment, and setting clear direction/expectation are key skills we will cover.

Managing Managers

In this session we will discuss 3 specific challenges and identify solutions to help you move past them. I will provide personalized guidance and advice to help you navigate any issues you may be facing in your role as an engineering director. This session will give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and receive direct support from me as your mentor. 

The challenges will be shared anonymously (by survey), and discussed with the entire group. By the end, we should have a clear understanding of the problem, and ways to solve it.
